In July, we spontaneously felt like going on a short trip and decided to extend our weekend until Tuesday. We were looking for a destination that wasn’t too far from Aschaffenburg and offered exceptional accommodation – ideally with a balcony and pool. That’s exactly what we found and ended up in Koblenz. Only 1.5 hours away by car – perfect. Sound interesting? Here are our tips.
1. Free parking
I always use the Parkopedia app to check in advance whether there is free parking, as four days of parking would be expensive. Unfortunately, our accommodation didn’t offer parking. It was difficult to find a suitable parking space in Koblenz itself. In the end, we parked at P R Koblenz Moselweiß, directly under a bridge, about 3 km from the old town. Shuttle buses run from there, but we walked comfortably along the Moselle to Münzplatz in 30 minutes.
2. Accommodation with whirlpool
The Honeybee Penthouse is located directly on Münzplatz in Koblenz. The location is ideal for sightseeing, shopping and nightlife. In summer, it can get a little noisy outside at night. The highlight of the spacious penthouse maisonette apartment is a large roof terrace with a whirlpool, the temperature of which you can regulate individually. There are also plenty of seating options, a barbecue and subtle lighting. The modern, bright furnishings give the apartment a clean and personal character.
3. Coffee bar
The Kaffeewirtschaft is located directly on Münzplatz, with a great outdoor area. The Martini Royal is highly recommended. However, at 34 degrees in the shade, the waiters could have come by a little more often.
4. eGeloSla store (ice cream parlor)
You should definitely visit this ice cream parlor when the weather is warm. I’ve never had such delicious and fluffy ice cream! Even my girlfriend, who doesn’t normally like ice cream, liked it so much that she wanted more. There are about five different types of chocolate, and I can particularly recommend the eGeloSla chocolate and blueberry. The prices are fair and the scoops are big – perfect!
5. Königsbacher beer garden at the Deutsches Eck
The Königsbacher Biergarten is just a few meters away from the Deutsches Eck, with a view of the Moselle. It’s really big, so you can usually always find a seat. We only had a few drinks there – beer and a wine spritzer – so you can’t go too far wrong. I can’t say anything about the food.
6. Lezizel Manti (Turkish Mantis)
If you don’t feel like cooking or eating out, order the delicious Turkish manti from Lezizel Manti via UberEats*! We tried the mantis with beef and vegetarian. The beef version with shepherd’s cheese and pastrami topping was great, but a little salty. If you’re really hungry, go for the large 1.5 portion. The pickled vegetables weren’t our thing, but the strawberry cheesecake for dessert was simply delicious!
7. Laibgenuss (café)
A small café in the pedestrian zone of Koblenz. I love chai lattes, and this one is really good!
8. Koblenz cable car
If you’re in Koblenz, you should definitely plan a ride on the cable car. The view is simply fantastic – you get a 360-degree view of the city and the Rhine and Moselle! We were there on a Monday morning and it was pretty quiet, so you don’t have to worry about long waiting times. Each gondola holds about 30 people, and there are a lot of gondolas. This makes for a quick turnaround.
9. German Corner
No visit to Koblenz is complete without a detour to the Deutsches Eck! The monument impresses with its monumental and enormous dimensions. The architecture may look familiar – it is the same architect who designed the Battle of the Nations Monument in Leipzig. And the best thing about it: it’s free to visit!
10. Tiefgarten Old Castle
A beautiful building with a small park and a fountain, perfect to stroll past and look at. We discovered it when we were walking from the Moselle promenade back to Münzplatz.
11. Wholemeal bakery Barth
This small bakery offers high-quality organic baked goods. We grabbed a delicious breakfast there and walked to the Rhine. I can particularly recommend the excellent croissants!
12. Koblenzer Kanten (panoramic view of the Rhine and Moselle)
If you take the cable car to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, just turn right at the top station. You can’t miss the Koblenzer Kanten. From here you have a magnificent panoramic view of Koblenz, the Deutsches Eck, the Rhine and the Moselle.
13. Basilica of St. Castor and Blumenhof (park)
On this hot day, we just wanted to find some shade after our cable car ride and discovered a park from afar. Next to the beautifully landscaped park with lots of plants, fountains and seating, we found a wonderful basilica with Romanesque architecture.
14. Stattstrand (beach bar)
In Metternich, opposite Koblenz, is the Stattstrand, a beach bar directly on the Moselle. We walked there from Münzplatz in about 45 minutes along the water. Stattstrand offers plenty of seating, some with large umbrellas. There are several bars for drinks and cocktails as well as a stand with small dishes. We treated ourselves to a pretzel and various cold drinks and relaxed wonderfully.
15. Beer garden at the frog pond
On the way home from Stattstrand, we took the Koblenz side of the Moselle and discovered this truly unique beer garden. There is an artificial frog pond in the middle, around which the tables, most of which are covered, are arranged. The seating here is pleasantly private and not back to back. We really liked it here. The beer garden is self-service only.
16. Hanoi (Vietnamese restaurant)
Our last Koblenz tip is the Vietnamese restaurant Hanoi. We ordered something to take away there. I had duck with vegetables, although I can’t remember the exact name of the dish. It was really tasty and good value for money.
